General Information About Jim Corbett
The Jim Corbett National Park, with its abundance of natural beauty and varied wildlife, attracts thousands of visitors every year. The number, official data indicates, has dramatically augmented over the years.
Nestled on the foothills of the Himalayas, the Jim Corbett National Park is spread over an area of 1288 sq. km. and is a last bastion for the big cats in India with over 160 tigers making the territory their abode. Besides this, the Park is one of the thirteen protected areas covered by World Wildlife Fund under their Terai Arc Landscape Programme which aims to protect three of the five terrestrial flagship species, the tiger, the Asian elephant and the Great One-horned Rhinoceros.
The Jim Corbett National Park is most famous for the elusive Bengal Tiger and Corbett Safaris but also has bountiful presence of deer, wild boar, and elephants amongst various others animals and birds. Several species of snakes have been reported from here, including the King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) and Indian Cobra (Naja naja). Indian Rock Pythons (Python molurus) are frequently sighted and there also exist several kinds of vipers, kraits and boas.
The park initially was named after Sir Hailey, the governor of united provinces and was called ‘Hailey National Park’. The Park, however, was renamed as ‘Ramganga National Park’ in 1952 and again in 1955-56 as ‘Jim Corbett National Park’ after Edward Jim Corbett. Jim Corbett was regarded as a well-known author and wildlife conservationist, who played a key role in creating the reserve by using his influence to persuade the provincial government to establish it.
